Symbol has developed a comprehensive in-house training programme to meet the needs of its staff. Due to the specialist nature of our work, we have created a sound body of expertise to be able to deliver training courses within our existing service contracts but also to external purchases. Our aim is to provide cost effective training opportunities for therapists, educational staff and parents / carers and others, to improve practise and knowledge in a range of issues for people with special needs.
Some examples of recent training events include:
- Specialist speech and language therapy course, 3 day programme to develop knowledge, skills and expertise for speech and language therapy working with Down Syndrome – delivered in conjunction with DSA
- Speech and language therapy Co–Worker training, a 3 days course delivered in conjunction with DSA to train and support co-workers to run speech and language therapy groups for people with Down Syndrome
- Competence in Augmentative and Alternative Communication for therapists and education staff.
- Communication with people with profound and Multiple learning disabilities – for therapists & care staff
- Working with Challenging Behaviour – for therapists, Care & education staff
- Effective Speech and Language Therapy Working in Schools – for education staff
- Supporting Children with Down Syndrome in Mainstream – for education and therapy staff
- Person Centred Communication – the therapeutic process
- Using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PEC’s) – for therapists & education staff
- Visual Communication Strategies Workshop – for therapists & education staff
- Eating & Drinking Level 1 & 2 Competences – for speech & language therapists
These training events have been commissioned by a range of purchasers, including East Berkshire PCT, Tizard Centre, Canterbury University and the Berkshire Autisitic Society Parent group.
